Indian batter Shubman Gill reflected on his performance in the Test series against England, describing it as a crucial "confidence boost" during a time when he was struggling for consistency in the longest format of cricket.

Speaking on JioCinema, Gill admitted that his first five-match Test series helped him regain faith in his abilities after a challenging phase. Prior to this, Gill had scored 838 runs in 34 innings, averaging 26.18, with just two centuries and two fifties.

Shubman Gill's breakthrough came during the second Test of the England series, where India was under pressure after a loss in the first Test. Despite struggling early on with scores of 23 and 0 in the first Test, Gill made a strong comeback in Visakhapatnam with a century (104) in the second innings.

This remarkable knock was a pivotal moment for both Gill and the Indian team, helping them regain momentum and eventually win the series 4-1.

"That was a big confidence boost for me, especially after losing the first Test match. Quite a few players were unavailable, so there was pressure on us to win the series," said Gill.

"I had never played five Test matches before, so it was a good experience and exciting to feel that intensity. Even after getting breaks following two Test matches, we never dropped that intensity."

Gill's inconsistent form in Test cricket raised questions about his place in the team, especially after lackluster performances in the ICC World Test Championship final and the tours to South Africa and England.

However, with a successful series at home against England, he silenced critics. In 2024, Gill has scored 498 runs in six Tests, averaging 49.80, with two centuries and two fifties, showing significant improvement.

Gill Praises Bangladesh's Recent Performance

As India prepare for the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh starting September 19, Gill remains focused. Gill praised Bangladesh's recent performances and cautioned against underestimating their team.

With strong middle-order batting and fast bowlers, Gill anticipates a competitive series as he looks to continue his form.

"I don’t think you can underestimate any international side. The kind of cricket Bangladesh has played in the last couple of months, especially in Pakistan, has been impressive. Their fast bowlers and the way their middle-order batters have absorbed pressure shouldn’t be disregarded. So, I believe it will be an interesting and intriguing contest," he said.
