England, under Jos Buttler, slumped to their fifth successive defeat of the 2023 World Cup by coming up 33 runs short of their arch-rivals Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Leading his side in their must-win match in Ahmedabad, the defending champions have now been officially knocked out of the competition’s semi-final race.

After the match, Buttler reflected on his team’s disastrous title-defence, as well as his own lacklustre touch with the bat this tournament.

Jos Buttler admits his form has concerned team

Prior to the match, England captain Jos Buttler had won the toss and invited Australia to bat first. Despite having them floored at 247-8 upfront, Adam Zampa and Mitchell Starc added crucial runs in the death to stretch Australia’s total to a competitive 286. Buttler admitted that his bowlers could have done better in preventing the late Australian surge, which eventually turned out to be a decisive factor between the two sides.

While speaking at the post-match presentation, he said:

“At half-way, we thought we did well and it could have been better, a frustrating partnership between Starc-Zampa, and with the dew on the field to come up 30 runs short, we could have done better.”

Jos Buttler also admitted that his own batting form has been a concern for England, considering the 33-year-old has only managed to score 106 runs from seven innings so far in the tournament. He said:

“I wanted to be positive and felt that was the right shot to play and throw something back to the opposition. My own form has been one of the biggest concerns, the pivotal role I play for the team and my dip in form has really hurt us especially with the touch I was in coming into the tournament.”

Mathematically out of the semi-final equation, Buttler’s troops have still a lot to play for in their remaining two matches. The cricketer claimed that they will be aiming to end the tournament on a good note, as a top eight finish will guarantee them a spot at the 2025 Champions Trophy.

“It's not far away, the Netherlands game and we hope to now end the tournament on a good note with wins.”

England will now face Netherlands in their penultimate group match of the competition. Currently placed at the bottom of the World Cup 2023 points table, wins in their remaining two fixtures will not only alter the complexion of the 10-team standings, but will also help them book a spot for the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

England’s much-awaited match against Netherlands will be played out on November 8 at the MCA Stadium in Pune.
