Brief Scores: Australia: 286 all out (49.3 overs) [Marnus Labuschagne: 71 (83), Cameron Green: 47 (52); Chris Woakes 4/54 (9.3), Adil Rashid 2/38 (10)] lost to England: 253 all out (48.1 overs) [Ben Stokes: 64 (90), Dawid Malan: 50 (64); Adam Zampa 3/21 (10), Pat Cummins 2/49 (10)] by 33 runs.

Australia registered their fifth win in a row, and consigned defending champions England to their fifth defeat in a row in their high-profile World Cup 2023 faceoff in Ahmedabad.

Labuschagne, Smith overcome Woakes threat in AUS 286

England’s new-ball pacer Chris Woakes struck twice within the powerplay to account for both of Australia’s in-form openers, Travis Head and David Warner. Woakes’ double-wicket burst with the new ball was followed by a counterattacking response from Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, who shared 75 runs for the third wicket.

However, Adil Rashid outfoxed Smith and newcomer Josh Inglis in quick succession to undo Australia’s preceding partnership, flooring them at 117-4. Labuschagne batted for an additional 45 minutes to end up top-scoring in the innings with 71, while power-hitters Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis muscled sparkling cameos in the middle overs to stage Australia’s recovery.

Adam Zampa produced four boundaries in the death overs in his 19-ball 29, before Woakes returned to claim the final two wickets on offer to finish with 4-54. Australia, having slumped to 117-4 at the halfway stage, surged to 286 by the end of their 50 overs.

Adam Zampa tears through England’s middle-order

Mitchell Starc beat Jonny Bairstow with a swinging thunderbolt down the legside to jolt England in the first ball of their response. Despite cautious half-centuries from Dawid Malan and Ben Stokes, the defending champions never recovered in their faltering innings, as lack of threatening partnerships kept Australia in the hunt throughout the run-chase.

In-form spinner Adam Zampa mowed down England’s middle-order with key wickets of Jos Buttler, Stokes and Moeen Ali as he finished with figures of 3-21 from 10 overs. Josh Hazlewood, captain Pat Cummins and Starc also pocketed two wickets each in their spells to fold up the Englishmen for just 253 in the penultimate over of the match.
