'Much Better If He Did...' - Wanindu Hasaranga Lashes Out At Umpire Over Non-No-Ball Call

The high-octane T20I series between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan came to an end last evening, where the hosts, despite suffering a defeat, ended up winning the three-match tourney 2-1.

However, the third T20I had its share of controversy, which erupted during the final over of Afghanistan's chase, where square-leg umpire Lyndon Hannibal failed to call a no-ball call, and bowler Wafadar Momand's delivery was above the waist of batter Kamindu Mendis.

As quoted by ESPNCricinfo, in the post-match conference, Sri Lanka's T20I captain Wanindu Hasaranga, not to mince his words, indirectly took a potshot at Hannibal, asking the umpire to look out for another job.

"That kind of thing shouldn't happen in an international match. If it had been close [to waist height], that's not a problem. But a ball that's going so high… it would have hit the batsman's head if it had gone a little higher,"  Hasaranga said. "If you can't see that, that umpire isn't suited to international cricket. It would be much better if he did another job."

Sri Lanka needed 11 off the final three balls, when the umpire failed to recognise a no-ball. With Mendis making no contact with the ball, the target became 11 off two, and Sri Lanka lost the encounter by three runs.

Interestingly, Mendis did ask for a DRS review, but as per ICC rules playing conditions do not allow player reviews for umpire decisions that do not involve potential dismissals.
