The Pakistan Cricket Board has reportedly softened its stance on the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. They have signalled a willingness to accept a hybrid hosting model. This move comes after the ICC proposed the hybrid model to address the ongoing challenges around hosting rights and travel restrictions due to political tensions between India and Pakistan.
Initially, PCB had threatened ICC to boycott the Champions Trophy if it wasn’t granted full hosting rights and India’s demand for a neutral venue was accepted. However, in the latest news, PCB has now indicated that it is open to a compromise. The new proposal is for Pakistan to retain partial hosting rights, while the remainder of the tournament could be played in neutral venues, including Dubai.
PCB Put Conditions For Hybrid Model
The PCB's acceptance of this model comes with a condition: they want the hybrid arrangement to be extended to future ICC events held in India until 2031. This would ensure that Pakistan doesn't have to travel to India for matches during that time.
PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi confirmed the move during a press conference in Dubai, saying that Pakistan is committed to doing what’s best for cricket, but with respect for the country’s pride.
Naqvi emphasised that the goal is to find a "win-win" solution where cricket thrives and both teams can participate without compromising their national pride.
“I don’t want to comment too much because that can ruin things. We have given our point of view (to the ICC), the Indians have also given theirs. The effort is to ensure a win-win for all," PCB chief told reporters.
“Cricket should win, that’s most important but with respect for all. We are going to do what’s best for cricket. Whichever formula we go for, it would be on equal terms," he added.
"Pakistan’s pride is most important. We have to ensure that cricket wins but Pakistan’s pride also remains intact," he said.
Why the Hybrid Model?
The ICC announced that a hybrid model was the only feasible solution for the Champions Trophy 2025 after India made it clear that it would not be sending its team to Pakistan. The hybrid model will allow Pakistan to maintain partial hosting rights while India will play their matches in Dubai.
The financial aspect of the hybrid model also includes arrangements that benefit the Emirates Cricket Board. Gate revenue from txhe matches played in Dubai will be exclusive to the Emirates Cricket Board, with no revenue-sharing with Pakistan. Despite this, the hybrid model still allows Pakistan to hold onto its role as a key venue for the Champions Trophy.
