Mohammed Shami, fresh from his splendid wicket-taking spree at the 2023 World Cup, is yet to play a single match for his country following the conclusion of the tournament. The speedster underwent few issues with his ankle after India’s final showdown against Australia, which prompted him to seek medical attention with a sports orthopedic doctor in Mumbai.

Jay Shah, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has now given a significant recovery update on Shami, on the sidelines of Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 auction on December 9.

Jay Shah says Mohammed Shami to be fit for Tests

While speaking with TOI after the WPL 2024 auction, Jay Shah said that Mohammed Shami should possibly attain full fitness in time for India’s two-match Test series against South Africa in late December 2023.

“Mohammed Shami should be fit for the South Africa Test series," said Jay Shah.

The Indian team is slated to face South Africa in two Test matches from December 26 until January 7 across Centurion and Cape Town. The series forms a significant chapter of India’s 2024 cricketing schedule, as it constitutes a part of the ongoing 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

Mohammed Shami is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru in a bid to attain full recovery for India’s future cricketing endeavors.

The 33-year-old is already included in India’s 16-player squad for the Test series, after being ruled out of team’s white-ball fixtures against the Proteas. The legendary pacer also missed out on India’s five-match T20I series against Australia in late November.

The first of the two Test matches is set to commence from December 26 onwards at the Centurion Park. The series will conclude with the decider the following week in Cape Town.
