The cricketing world witnessed a dynamic spectacle in the whirlwind of high-stakes bids and remarkable acquisitions at the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 auction. Among the sought-after stars like Kashvee Gautam, Annabel Sutherland, Vrinda Dinesh, and Shabnim Ismail, whose valiant skills commanded substantial prices, there exists a select group of dazzling talents whose names unexpectedly resonated in silence.

Here at OneCricket, we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing stars who, amidst the clamour of the auction, found themselves unsold by the end of the bidding event.

Top Five Unsold Players from WPL 2024 Auction

1. Chamari Athapaththu

Sri Lanka legend Chamari Athapaththu, a veteran of over 120 T20Is and nearly 100 ODI matches, possibly became the biggest snub of the WPL 2024 auction. With over 2,600 T20I runs to her name, the 33-year-old all-rounder is one of the highest run-getters of the format. Moreover, the cricketer did so while silently harvesting 40 wickets through her right-arm off-breaks on the side.

Athapaththu is already a prominent name in some of the leading franchise T20 leagues, having turned up for Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Renegades in WBBL and Guyana Amazon Warriors in CPL.

2. Deandra Dottin

Charismatic West Indies all-rounder Deandra Dottin failed to make the cut for next year's WPL season after she was snubbed by all five franchises at the 2024 auction. Earlier this year, the Barbados-based legend was roped in by Gujarat Giants for the tournament's inaugural season before she was ruled out owing to an injury.

It seems like Dottin, despite all her franchise-level experience, will have to wait a little longer for a potential return to WPL.

3. Tara Norris

American fast bowler Tara Norris found no takers for WPL 2024 despite starring in Delhi Capitals' runners-up campaign earlier this year. The 25-year-old left-arm speedster dismantled RCB in her maiden WPL appearance with match-winning figures of 5-29.

Norris has since played for North West Thunder in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and for London Spirit in the Women's Hundred 2023 season.

4. Amanda Jade-Wellington

A week after bowling Adelaide Strikers to an emphatic WBBL 2024 title, Australian leg-spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington went unsold at the WPL auction. On the night of the title clash against Brisbane Heat, the 26-year-old scored crucial unbeaten runs and claimed three key wickets to cap a remarkable all-round performance and a 'Player of the Match' award.

The South Australian legend is already a key performer for several globally recognised T20 franchises, including Barbados Royals and Manchester Originals.

5. Alana King

Much like fellow Australian leg-spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington, Alana King also failed to get recognized despite all her T20 franchise experience. The 28-year-old all-rounder continues to remain an integral member of Australia's white-ball unit, as well as a lethal exponent of spin for Trent Rockets and Perth Scorchers in The Hundred and WBBL, respectively.
