Faf Du Plessis ruled out of SA20 2026; PSL participation in doubt

In a significant and emotional development, Joburg Super Kings captain, Faf Du Plessis has been ruled out for the remainder of SA20 2025-26 due to injury. The 41-year-old, who is deeply respected by fans and teammates alike, has suffered a ligament tear in his right thumb and will now bravely undergo surgery.

Joburg Super Kings took to their social media platforms to update fans about the change. ”All our love with you, skipper. Faf du Plessis has been ruled out of the remainder of the SA20 season after suffering a right thumb ligament tear requiring surgical repair. Our best wishes are with you,” tweeted JSK. 

At present, the team has not made any replacements, and there is also uncertainity around who will lead Joburg Super kings for the rest of the season. 

Regarding the team’s performance, the Men in Yellow are having a decent season, currently placed third with three wins and two defeats in seven games.

Faf Du Plessis in top form in SA20 2025-26

Du Plessis' injury is a big blow to Joburg Super Kings because Faf Du Plessis has been in some fine form and amassed 135 runs in five innings, averaging 27.00 and a strike-rate of 151.69. The 41-year-old didn't had the best of starts as he collected just 5 runs in the first two games.

The season turned for Faf since the third game and he scored three-consecutive fifty-plus scores. 

Faf's tryst with injuries since IPL 2025

Faf is one of the most fittest players in the world, but the Proteas star has been surrounded by injuries since a year. Talking about IPL 2025 with Delhi Capitals, the right-handed batter played just nine games for the Capitals and missed most of the season because of the finger injury. 

Since IPL 2025, Faf has had issues with his hand and now in the latest events, the 41-year-old is forced to undergo a surgery.

Faf's PSL participation in doubt

The upcoming edition of PSL will overlap with IPL and therefore, a lot of players who are falling out of scheme of things in IPL decided to prefer PSL over the cash-studded league. Faf Du Plessis is one of them and had decided to play PSL 2026 over IPL.

However, now with the injury, Faf's PSL participation looks in doubt because of the surgery. At present, there is no timeline on his return, but there is a posibility that Faf might miss a few games.
