Virat Kohli continued his prolific run with the bat by punching out a match-winning 93 against New Zealand in the series-opening first ODI in Baroda. The innings marked Virat Kohli’s seventh successive 50-plus score in List A cricket, which included two ODI centuries against South Africa last month.
With Kohli making the most of his second coming in ODI cricket following his Test retirement, his ex-teammate Ravichandran Ashwin offered a telling insight into the mindset behind the Indian great’s sustained excellence.
Virat Kohli batting with childhood attitude, believes Ashwin
While speaking on his YouTube channel, former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin claimed that Virat Kohli is seemingly playing with complete freedom these days. The legendary cricketer even stated that Kohli looks to be batting with the attitude that he might have carried during his childhood.
Ravichandran Ashwin said, “It looks like nothing is going on in his mind. You asked me what he has changed-he hasn't changed anything; he is just not thinking about anything. He made a decision that he just wants to enjoy his cricket. It seems like he is playing with the attitude of batting in his childhood, combined with the experience of so many years.”
Ravichandran Ashwin also praised Shreyas Iyer for making instant impact on his return from injury, considering the Indian ODI vice-captain made a quick 49 in the run-chase against New Zealand. However, he also criticized Iyer’s mode of dismissal against Kyle Jamieson.
Ashwin said, “We know that Shreyas has been Mr. Consistent for India in ODI cricket. His dismissal was very unlike Shreyas; he never leaves the game like this-he generally finishes it. But it is very understandable; he is making a comeback, and that was a good ball by Jamieson.”
Kohli on road towards 2027 World Cup
Playing only ODI cricket for Team India, Virat is reportedly eyeing to play till the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup in South Africa next year. Since the conclusion of the IPL 2025 season, the legendary Indian batter has played seven ODI matches, aggregating 469 runs at an astonishing batting average of 93.80.
alongside the rest of his teammates will next be seen playing the second ODI of the series against New Zealand on January 14 in Rajkot.
