'Maybe There Is More To It,' Ex-IND Opener On KL Rahul's Injury-Forced Absence

KL Rahul's persistent troubles with a quadriceps pain forced the elegant and in-form Indian batter out of the fourth Test against England as well.

After missing the second and the third Test in Vizag and Ranchi, the Karnataka right-hander is now ruled out of the Ranchi Test with his injury issues grabbing the attention of fans and prominent experts.

Among them, former India opener Aakash Chopra worried that Rahul could be dealing with a serious injury, which has seemingly reoccurred after the cricketer underwent surgery on his quads last year, having hurt his hamstring during IPL 2023 for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

The latest injury has rained on the player's impressive comeback into the Test team after smashing a memorable century on the tour of South Africa and scoring a skilful 86 in the first innings of the Hyderabad Test against England.

Chopra On KL Rahul's Injury Troubles

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra raised doubts over Rahul's injury status and said he could be out for another prolonged phase, which would be extremely frustrating for the 31-year-old with a history of untimely and unfortunate injuries.

"They were saying that KL Rahul would be available for the next match and then the match after that, the third and the fourth Test, but now he could probably be available for the fifth, we don't know as of now. So, it started as a niggle, maybe there is a bit more to it. You and I will never know," Chopra said.

Chopra also believes Rahul's absence has given struggling newcomer Rajat Patidar a lease of life as he can be assured of his spot for the penultimate Test of the series despite failings in the previous two games.

"Since he is not available, it means there will be no change in the Indian XI as far as the batting lineup is concerned. So it's a golden opportunity for Rajat Patidar to score runs, or else it could be a problem," he added.

Patidar, who has only managed 46 runs in his first four innings at the Test level for India, could've faced the axe if Rahul had made a comeback to the team in Ranchi, where the fourth Test starts on Friday (February 23).
