'Management Was Unaware Of Dhoni's Decision' - CSK CEO On Gaikwad Becoming Captain

Chennai Super Kings will start their IPL 2025 campaign on March 23 when they take on Mumbai Indians. Both teams are eying their sixth IPL title, but CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad is still searching for his maiden title as a captain. 

Notably, MSD led CSK to their fifth title in 2023 and then left captaincy for Gaikwad in 2024. It was a shocking move as the fans were left surprised because of the timing of the decision. It was not until a day prior to the start of the league that CSK announced that change.

CSK CEO Spills Tea On Gaikwad's Captaincy

In the latest events, CSK CEO Kasi has shed light on that decision and revealed that the CSK management were unaware of the decision. He admitted that Dhoni and head coach Stephen Flemming discussed the matter among themselves and took the decision. 

“I think it was a decision only taken by MS [Dhoni] and Flem [Fleming], and it was announced at the last moment. The management was not aware of it, but they took the right decision,” Viswanathan said in a video posted on CSK’s YouTube channel.


“Flem as well as the skipper had the confidence that Rutu would be the right choice. And based on his performance, they felt that he would be a very good choice because of his qualities as a player and how he could also move with the other players in the team. And he was watching MS from close quarters, so that gave him [Gaikwad] the confidence.”

It is not the first time that CSK CEO has admitted that the management haven't been aware of most of Dhoni's actions as they were also clueless during IPL 2025 retention saga where it was unclear whether MS Dhoni would play IPL or not.
