In a recent development, veteran pacer Mohammed Shami has made headline recently with his terrific performance in the Ranji Trophy. Despite his successful return to competitive cricket last week, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has voiced concerns over Shami’s potential value in the auction for the upcoming IPL 2025. With a history of injuries and a year-long absence from the game, Manjrekar believes franchises might hesitate to shell out big amount for the seasoned bowler.

Manjrekar Raises Concern Of Shami's Fitness For IPL

Speaking on Star Sports, Sanjay Manjrekar highlighted the risks associated with Shami’s injury record. He added that and explained how a mid-season breakdown could severely affect a franchise's campaign.

"There will definitely be interest from teams, but given Shami's injury history—and this recent one took a significant amount of time to recover—there’s always a concern about a potential breakdown during the season. If a franchise invests heavily and then loses him mid-season, their options become limited. This concern might lead to a drop in his price tag," Manjrekar said on Star Sports.

However, it is important to mention that, Shami is returning from a prolonged knee injury that kept him out of action for nearly a year.

His last international appearance was in the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia, after which he missed the entire 2024 IPL season. The Gujarat Titans, for whom Shami delivered stellar performances in 2022 and 2023 has opted to not retain him for the upcoming season.

To prove his fitness and prepare himself for the mega event, Shami is also set to represent Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024.

Mohammed Shami's Sellar Return To Cricket After Recovery

Recently last week, Mohammed Shami made a significant return to cricket when he played in Bengal’s fifth-round Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh. The pacer picked up seven wickets across two innings. Additionally, he played a crucial knock of 37 runs, that helped Bengal to secure a narrow 11-run victory.

As the IPL mega auction approaches, franchises will focus on Mohammed Shami's performance in the upcoming SMAT to see if the speedster has completely recovered and can adapt according to the needs and demands of the IPL 2025
