Shreyas Iyer is the 5th Indian player to win IPL as captain (AP)
Shreyas Iyer had won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders and is the fifth Indian player to win the title after Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir, Rohit Sharma, and Hardik Pandya as the captain of a franchise.
Former Indian selector MSK Prasad had claimed that Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) were grooming Shreyas Iyer as the captain of India. Earlier in 2020, Shreyas Iyer led Delhi Capitals (DC) to the finals of IPL but lost to Rohit Sharma's Mumbai Indians (MI) in the final.
When Shreyas became injured, Rishabh Pant assumed the captaincy of DC, and Shreyas left for KKR in the mega auctions. He was injured again last season, and it was Nitish Rana who led KKR as captain.
Virat Kohli had Shreyas Iyer at mind as his successor
MSK Prasad says Shreyas Iyer was groomed by BCCI by allowing him to lead 10 tournaments as India A captain. As per the former selector, Shreyas Iyer's name didn't come into the equation in a day.
Virat Kohli had Shreyas in mind as his successor, but Shreyas Iyer's injury ruined everything. A lot happened since then, and Rohit Sharma had to assume the captaincy of the Indian team.
Shreyas Iyer is not picked for India's squad for the T20 World Cup. He had played in the last ODI World Cup where India lost to Australia in the final. It is Hardik Pandya who is the current vice-captain of India in T20s.
