Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has put an end to all the buzz about his retirement. The 34-year-old pacer made it clear that he isn’t planning to quit cricket anytime soon.
Shami hasn’t played for India since the Champions Trophy 2025. He was also left out of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy squad, and his IPL 2025 season with Sunrisers Hyderabad didn’t go as expected. The Bengal pacer scalped just 6 wickets at an average of 56.16.
Notably, since his injury after the 2023 World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Shami has struggled to get back to his best form.
Mohammed Shami Talks About His Retirement Plans
With several senior Indian cricketers recently retiring, most notably Cheteshwar Pujara, rumours started swirling that Shami might also call it a day. But Shami has shut down these rumours in style.
On Thursday, speaking to News24 journalist Manak Gupta, he said:
"If someone has a problem, tell me, if it is like their lives become better if I take retirement. Tell me whose life have I become a rock in that you want me to retire? The day I get bored, I will leave. You don't pick me, but I will keep working hard. You don't pick me in international, I will play domestic. I will keep playing somewhere or the other. You have to make these decisions when you start feeling bored. That is not the time for me now."
Despite being a proven match-winner, Shami wasn’t picked for India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad. The selectors chose Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, and Arshdeep Singh as the main fast bowlers instead.
It is worth mentioning that Shami’s immediate focus is on the Duleep Trophy 2025, starting August 28, where he’ll play for East Zone against North Zone. A good show there could bring him back into the Indian Test team.
