Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) collapsed to a 98-run larruping at the hands of the visiting KKR troops in Lucknow in match number 54 of the IPL 2024 season. Under the guise of captain and opening batter KL Rahul, the hosts managed to list just 137 in a monumental task of 236 runs.

The outcome also handed LSG’s net run-rate prospects a massive dent in the race for the IPL 2024 playoffs.

After the match, losing skipper KL Rahul reflected his team’s “poor performance” and hailed KKR opener Sunil Narine for his attacking approach with the bat at the top.

KL Rahul admits LSG’s run-chase failure

While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, LSG captain KL Rahul said that his team lost too many wickets in their pursuit of a huge target.

Admitting LSG’s “poor overall performance”, the dashing wicketkeeper-batter also praised KKR openers Sunil Narine and Phil Salt for their attacking approach early in the game. He said:

“I think there were too many runs to be scored in the second innings. When you're chasing a big total, you tend to go too hard, and as a result, you end up losing wickets. So, yeah, just a poor performance overall. I think Sunil Narine and Phil Salt in the powerplay, we've seen how they bat, and they do put a lot of pressure on our young bowlers. They just couldn't handle that kind of pressure. Narine hit some really, really good shots, and that's how the IPL is.”

KL Rahul also added that the playing conditions on offer were favorable for the batters, but claimed that his bowlers ended up conceding 20-30 runs above par during KKR’s 235-run rampage. He added:

“The wicket was really good. It felt like a pretty true wicket. There was a bit of bounce if you bowled hard lengths and back of lengths, but nothing out of the ordinary. It didn't seem like a pitch that was really bad. I think 235 was probably 20 or 30 runs above par.”

Currently placed at number five on the IPL 2024 points table, the LSG skipper said that his team will now be aiming to win their remaining three games and claim a potential berth at the playoffs.

“Moving forward, we'll analyze our errors and aim to improve. We have three games ahead, and winning all of them is crucial for a top-four spot. That'll give us more freedom and confidence.”

KL Rahul and co. will now be seen facing Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in match number 57 of the IPL 2024 season. The much-awaited contest will be staged at Hyderabad on May 8.
