Punjab Kings had their newfound winning momentum hampered by CSK at Dharamshala on May 5. Chasing 168 for a win, Sam Curran and co. fell 28 runs short of their target to register their seventh defeat of the IPL 2024 season.

The outcome also toughened up Punjab Kings’ journey towards a possible top four finish, as they are now left to chase an uphill task to qualify for the playoffs.

How can Punjab Kings qualify for IPL 2024 playoffs?

Punjab Kings has secured just four wins and coped seven defeats from their 11 league stage fixtures. As of now, they find themselves placed at number eight on the IPL 2024 points table.

Punjab Kings still has three games left in the bag, as they are slated to face RCB on May 9, table-toppers Rajasthan Royals on May 15 and playoffs contenders SRH on May 19. In a bid to secure a top four finish on the 10-team standings, the Punjab-based franchise not only need to win each of their remaining three fixtures, but have to make sure they do so with emphatic margins to lift their negative net run-rate.

Moreover, Punjab Kings will also hope that the KL Rahul-led LSG group or Pat Cummins’ SRH loses at least three or all of their remaining four league fixtures. They will also be hoping that defending champions CSK fail to win their three remaining games.

Unfortunately for Punjab Kings, two of their remaining three league matches are both away fixtures, that too, against two of the leading playoffs contenders of the season. Their immediate challenge, however, is against an equally-struggling RCB unit on May 9 at Dharamshala.

Apart from depending on exterior results, the best the Punjab Kings franchise can do at the moment is to try and overcome each of their three impending IPL 2024 league stage opponents.
