The fourth edition of the Women’s Premier League is all set to kick off from January 9, with Mumbai Indians taking on Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the curtain raiser game. A lot of pre-season changes took place recently, and the most important one was Delhi Capitals going for a new captain.

Notably, the Capitals have lost three straight finals since the inception of the league, and for WPL 2026, Delhi roped in Jemimah Rodrigues as their captain, replacing Meg Lanning, who shifted her base to UP Warriorz during the auction.

Jemimah has donned the captain’s role for the first time in her career, and she will be leading a group full of experienced players, such as Marizanne Kapp and Laura Wolvaardt. In the latest events, South Africa all-rounder Marizanne Kapp has opened up on the leadership change and spoke highly about Rodrigues.

Kapp backs Jemimah as the next India captain

Kapp, in an interview with Cricbuzz, stated that she feels Jemimah Rodrigues is the perfect choice to be the next India captain.

"I actually said a couple of years ago that Jemimah should be India's next captain. She's always been a leader. Her personality, the way she brings people together, the caring factor, all matter. Even experienced captains face challenges. Jemimah has a lot of senior players around her, and I think she'll take this opportunity with both hands."

Kapp credits WPL for her personal growth

Marizanne Kapp joined WPL in 2023 with Delhi Capitals and has been with the franchise for over three years. Kapp has been an integral part of the Capitals setup for three years. Further, she credited WPL for her personal growth as well.

"On a personal level, my game would never have grown the way it has if it wasn't for these leagues," she said. "Even when you look at the youngsters coming through now, a lot of that is thanks to leagues like the WPL."

Kapp will now play for Delhi Capitals for the fourth straight season and was one of the strong contenders to lead the Capitals for WPL 2026.
