In a significant development, Bangladesh's interim government has decided to ban broadcasting for upcoming edition of IPL 2026 starting from March 26. The decision has come days after BCCI instructed Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur Rahman from the squad because of recent communal violence in Bangladesh.
Earlier, there were rumours that the Bangladesh government might reciprocate by banning coverage of IPL in their country, but on Monday, January 5, the government officially put out a notice confirming blocking IPL coverage. Bangladesh has now become the second country after Pakistan to block IPL coverage.
Mustafizur's IPL exit triggers row in Bangladesh
The official press statement released by Bangladesh's ministry of Information and Broadcasting mentioned that the reason behind blocking IPL's coverage in the country is due to Mustafizur Rahman's exit from the league.
"In view of the subject, it is being informed that a directive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has come to light regarding the exclusion of Bangladeshi star player Mr Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders team for the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament, scheduled to be held from 26 March 2026. No rational reason for such a decision by the Indian Cricket Board is known, and such a decision has pained, saddened, and aggrieved the people of Bangladesh," the official statement said.
Why did BCCI ask KKR to drop Mustafizur Rahman?
Tensions escalated in December after the brutal lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu factory worker in Bangladesh, an incident that sparked strong reactions in India and led to rising dissent on social media. Recently, religious group leaders called for boycott because the Indian citizens are angered by the recent happening in Bangladesh.
The demand to remove Mustafizur Rahman rose to a new level and it forced the BCCI to act swiftey.
Bangladesh refuse to travel to India
In a significant decvelopment, Bangladesh have decided that they won’t travel to India for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 and want the games to be relocated to Sri Lanka. The interim government cited security issues because of the anger within public, which was trigged after the recent events in Bangladesh.
At present, there are reports that Bangladesh have written to the ICC and the International Cricket Council is also redrawing the T20 World Cup 2026 schedule.
