When Wasim Akram speaks about fast bowling, the cricketing world listens. The legendary Pakistan pacer has now heaped praise on India’s spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, calling him nothing short of a “modern-day great.”

Akram In Awe Of Bumrah

For Akram, Jasprit Bumrah’s unique action, pace and the way India manages him make him stand out in this era where bowlers are always under the pump.

Akram, speaking on the show Hasna Mana Hai, couldn’t hide his admiration for India’s strike bowler.

“Jasprit Bumrah is a world-class bowler, no doubt about it. He has a very unusual action, he has pace, and the way India is managing him is incredible. Full credit to the management and their mindset,” Akram said.

When asked if Bumrah was an all-time great, the former left-arm genius kept things simple.

“One should not compare eras. He is a right-arm fast bowler, I was a left-arm quick. I’ve seen debates on social media, but neither he cares nor do I. He is a modern great. I did my bit in my time, but he is very impressive.”

The Challenges Of Today’s Game

Wasim Akram also explained why bowlers like Bumrah deserve extra credit in today’s conditions.

“In the 90s, there was no T20. In ODIs, batters often left bad balls, but now even good balls in Tests get hammered. There’s much more pressure on bowlers these days. Jasprit has more chances of picking wickets since batters are always looking for shots. As bowlers, we enjoy that aggression.”

In short, Akram believes Bumrah has mastered the art of thriving in an era where bowlers are expected to have nerves of steel and skills to match.

Akram On WTC Two-Tier system

The Sultan of Swing also weighed in on the proposed two-tier system for the World Test Championship, making his stance clear.

“If Pakistan, West Indies, and Bangladesh keep playing among themselves, how will they improve? I don’t agree with the two-tier system. Test cricket needs quality teams. There’s no point in letting associate teams play Tests before developing their first-class structure.”

Meanwhile, from fans to former greats, Jasprit Bumrah continues to earn plaudits not just for his wicket-taking ability but also for his temperament and fitness. When someone like Wasim Akram, a bowler who himself redefined the craft, calls you a modern-day great, it only adds another feather in the cap of India’s pace sensation.
