Former Indian cricketer, Cheteshwar Pujara has always been the man who wore courage on his sleeve. For more than a decade, he held India’s batting together at No. 3, weathering storms and blunting the best bowlers in the world.
Now, as he hangs up his boots from all forms of cricket, tributes have poured in from every corner. Among them came a special one, a heartfelt letter from none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
PM Modi’s Touching Words For Cheteshwar Pujara
Pujara, who announced his retirement after a glittering career of 103 Tests and 7,195 runs, took to social media to share the letter from PM Modi. The Prime Minister hailed Pujara for his contribution to Indian cricket, especially in the longer format.
“In an age dominated by shorter formats of cricket, you were a reminder of the beauty of the longer format of the game. Your unflappable temperament and ability to bat long hours with great concentration made you the fulcrum of the Indian batting line-up,” Modi wrote.
The PM also pointed out how Pujara’s innings in Australia remain etched in fans’ memories.
“For example, fans will always remember instances like the tests in Australia, when you laid the foundation for India’s historic first-ever series win on Australian soil! Standing tall against one of the most potent bowling attacks, you showed what it meant to shoulder responsibility for the team.”
More Than Just Numbers
Pujara’s career has always been about more than just runs and averages. He was India’s eighth-highest run-getter in Tests, but his calm presence at the crease gave teammates and fans alike the belief that the innings was in safe hands. Modi captured that essence perfectly in his words:
“No numbers can capture the sense of calm that your presence gave to fans and teammates, that the team’s fate was in safe hands. This is truly your abiding legacy that goes beyond mere numbers.”
The Prime Minister also praised Pujara for continuing to play first-class cricket even while being an established international star, keeping Saurashtra cricket alive and thriving.
“Your long association with Saurashtra cricket and your contribution to putting Rajkot on the cricketing map will remain a source of immense pride for every youngster in the region,” he said.
Family, Sacrifices And New Innings
Modi did not forget the support system behind Cheteshwar Pujara’s career.
“I am sure that your father, a cricketer himself as well as your mentor, is proud of you. Puja and Aditi must be delighted to be able to spend more time with you. They have all made great sacrifices to support you along the way,” he added.
He also acknowledged Pujara’s budding second innings as a commentator and analyst:
“Beyond the field, your in-depth analysis as a commentator continues to add great value to cricket enthusiasts, who look forward to hearing your insights. I am confident that you will keep yourself associated with the game and inspire budding cricketers.”
Pujara’s Response
Humbled by the gesture, Pujara thanked the Indian Premier on X.
“I was honoured to receive a letter of appreciation on my retirement from our Honourable Prime Minister. The warm sentiments expressed are much appreciated. While I venture into my second innings, I cherish every memory on the field, and all the love and appreciation I have received. Thank you Sir.”
A Career To Remember
Taking over the No. 3 slot after Rahul Dravid, Pujara became India’s new “Wall”: old school in technique, unshakeable in temperament and selfless in approach. From grinding out bowlers in Adelaide to standing tall in Brisbane, his knocks were the base of India’s most famous Test wins.
With 19 hundreds, 35 fifties and numerous match-saving knocks at the crease, Pujara has left behind a legacy written in grit and patience.
As Modi’s letter beautifully summed up, his greatest gift to Indian cricket wasn’t just runs on the board but the reassurance that when Pujara was out there, India was still in the fight.
