When asked to analyse Rajasthan Royals opening batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s record-breaking knock, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill, sized up as the 14-year-old player’s “day”. Subbed out in the second innings, Gill couldn’t do much to control the left-handed batter’s carnage in Jaipur last night.
"It was his [lucky] day, you know? His hitting was just tremendous and I think he made full use of his day,” Gill told host broadcaster JioStar after an 8-wicket thumping.
Shubman Gill Irks Ajay Jadeja
Part of IPL 2025 commentary panel, former India batter Ajay Jadeja seemed annoyed with Gill pointing out the luck factor in his assessment of the second-fastest century in IPL history.
"But a 14-year-old to believe in himself, the amount that he believes in himself, and to take it that far, even if it's, you know, one day, like some player on television just said, ‘oh, it was just his lucky day’,” Jadeja was quoted as saying by JioStar.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi Has Arrived
Youngest batter to register a half-century and century in the IPL (even T20s, for that matter), Suryavanshi also scored the fastest IPL century by an Indian batter (off 35 balls).
Having hit seven fours and 11 sixes at a strike rate of 265.78, the left-handed batter also equalled former Chennai Super Kings batter Murali Vijay’s record of hitting 11 sixes – highest among Indians in the cash-rich league.
With 94 out of his 101 (38) coming off boundaries, Suryavanshi also outperformed Abhishek Sharma in terms of scoring the highest proportion of runs during a century through boundaries. Notably, Suryavanshi’s 93.06% is better than Abhishek’s 92.45% during a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match for Punjab against Meghalaya.
Bought by RR for INR 1.1 crore, many believed that Suryavanshi would warm the bench throughout the season. His latest knock, however, has it in it to allure eyeballs whenever he walks out to bat in the future.
