Indian cricket has always been about the heavyweights but once in a while, a young buck comes along and rips up the script. Enter Vaibhav Suryavanshi, just 14 years old, already sending seasoned bowlers on a leather hunt.

The Rajasthan Royals youngster made headlines in IPL 2025 when he hammered a 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans, becoming the youngest-ever IPL centurion. Eight fours, eleven sixes and a strike-rate that would give bowlers nightmares, this teenager arrived and kicked the door down.

Now the big question doing the rounds is: Could Vaibhav Suryavanshi actually make it to India’s squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup? Sounds like a daydream, right? Or maybe... just maybe... it’s a dream about to turn real.

How Vaibhav Suryavanshi Announced Himself?

Playing at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, Vaibhav showed zero respect for reputations. Senior pros like Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna were made to look like bowling machines. He smashed 28 runs off Ishant in one over and ripped apart Karim Janat for a 30-run carnage.

Opening with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav stitched a blistering 166-run stand, making the 210-run target look like a walk in the park. He finally fell for 101 off 38 balls but by then, the damage was well and truly done. In just 3 IPL matches so far, the left-hander has notched up 151 runs at a ridiculous strike rate of 215.71.

India's Existing Opening Options

Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma are the current top picks when it comes to India's T20 opening slot. Both can be match-winners on their day, but consistency? Well, that’s been their weakness.

Samson, thanks to his experience and the fact he can keep wickets, will probably hold onto his spot. But it’s not locked in stone.The others like Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, Sharma, and Dhruv Jurel, none of them have exactly set the world on fire lately.

Meanwhile, guys like Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad are classy but maybe a tad too slow for the mad-dash nature of modern T20s. Strike rate is king now and that’s where someone like Vaibhav can steal a march.

It’s not like Vaibhav is the only youngster making noise. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh have also lit up IPL 2025 with some swashbuckling knocks. But when you smash a hundred off 35 balls against big names at 14, it’s bound to turn more heads. If Vaibhav keeps this up, selectors might just be forced to take a leap of faith.

India's Conservative Approach Over The Years

Historically, Indian cricket has played it safe. They have often backed experience over X-factor. Even till the 2024 T20 World Cup, they carried players like Ravindra Jadeja whose game wasn't exactly tailor-made for the format.

The Indian think tank tends to trust reputations more than raw flamboyance. Safe picks, established names, that's the blueprint they have followed. But if they want to stay ahead of the curve, they will need to tear that playbook apart. T20s are about fearless cricket now. Big hitters, quick movers, bold calls, that’s the future.

For now, it would be premature to throw Vaibhav into the deep end. The smarter play is to give him consistent chances, let him grow and see if he can handle the heat.

The BCCI and selectors will definitely have an eye on his journey. If he keeps batting with the same fearlessness, timing, and swagger, don’t be surprised if this daydream soon becomes primetime reality.
