'It's Wrong For India,' Rohit Sharma Captaincy Described By Ex-Aussie Ahead of World Cup

Rohit Sharma, one of the most successful IPL skippers of all time, led Team India sporadically whenever regular captain Virat Kohli took a break from the game. The star opening batsman led the ‘Men in Blue’ to much success in the latter’s absence, helping them capture the Nidahas tri-series and an Asia Cup, both in 2018.

Shortly after India’s crashing first-round exit from the T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE, Sharma replaced Kohli to become the team’s new all-format captain going ahead. However, the change made no difference to India’s fortunes as they failed to make it to the finals in 2022’s Asia Cup and its subsequent T20 World Cup in Australia.

As it turns out, former Australian batter Greg Blewett believes Team India might well lose out the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 at home as well, claiming that Sharma’s leadership does not seem to be suiting the Indian side.

Blewett believes Sharma just clinging on

While interacting on the WillowTalk Podcast, Greg Blewett questioned the Indian team management and the BCCI for replacing Virat Kohli with Rohit Sharma as team’s all-format captain. The former Australian batsman acknowledged Sharma’s unsuccessful track record as regular skipper in multi-nation events, and fears the worst for Team India at the upcoming World Cup 2023 in front of their home crowd.

“I am worried about India's ODI captain. I really am. Rohit Sharma is just clinging on, and I would have thought that India might have made a move by now on the one-day leadership. I just can see it going wrong again for India. They always get to these World Cups and they just don't get it done and I’m just not sure that Rohit is getting it done for them.”

Blewett added:

“I just see that Rohit is just hanging by a thread. He is getting a game at the moment because he is captain. And I don't know whether that's the right way to go.”

In the meantime, Rohit Sharma is leading the Indian team in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 in Sri Lanka. The continental event itself serves as team’s final set of dress rehearsals in their road towards the 2023 World Cup at home next month.
