'It's Not Entertaining...,' Indian Bowling Coach Blasts Windies Batters and Slow Pitch In The Second Test

India concluded the first Test with a comprehensive innings win over West Indies on a turning pitch in Dominica last week, thanks to the brilliant spin bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja who collectively bagged 17 wickets.

Mhambrey addresses slow progression of second Test

However, the flat pitch in Trinidad has so far yielded just 15 wickets over three days, with West Indies continuing their first innings at 229/5 after 108 overs in response to India's massive 438.

The pitch conditions have challenged the bowlers, but India's bowling coach, Paras Mhambrey, feels that West Indies' overly defensive approach is also contributing to the slow progression of the game.

After the conclusion of play on Day 3, Mhambrey stated that the pitch was very sluggish, providing an easy opportunity for batters. He also noted that the West Indies batsmen were overly defensive, which restricted their scoring and didn't present many wicket-taking opportunities for the Indian bowlers.

However, he commended the Indian bowlers for their hard work and delivering the required performances under these conditions.

"The pitch is very slow, very easy for batting. Towards the end, it started turning a bit. West Indies were defensive with the bat too. When there’s an attempt to play shots, there’s an opportunity to get a wicket but they didn’t even try that," said Mhambrey.

Mhambrey further stressed the importance of a balanced pitch that provides equal opportunities for both batters and bowlers. He voiced concern that excessively flat pitches are not entertaining and not conducive to decisive results.

“I think the pitch should be sporting. There has to be a balance - something for batters and bowlers. Yes, Dominica pitch had turn but we utilised the conditions better, the quality of our bowlers allowed us to use it well. On this pitch though it will be hard to take 20 wickets. Obviously, it’s hard work for bowlers on such wickets but yeah, they shouldn’t be so flat. It’s not entertaining, you want to get results,"  added the bowling coach.

Mhambrey reckoned that the Indian team is focused on winning the match by concentrating on each session at a time.

He mentioned that the still new ball and the impressive bowling by Mohammed Siraj and Mukesh could provide the opportunity to claim early wickets and open up the game on the fourth day. The 51-year-old assured that the team is playing with a victory-oriented mindset.
