In a stunning display of athleticism during a Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023 clash between Washington Freedom (WF) and the San Francisco Unicorns (SFU), New Zealand cricketer, Glenn Phillips yet again validated his global acclaim by claiming an absolute blinder.

Phillips' fielding heroics helped Washington Unicorns continue their winning streak

The Kiwi batter, who had a disappointing stint at the crease where he returned to the pavilion after a three-ball duck, redeemed himself by producing sublime displays of fielding which proved instrumental in turning the match in WF’s favour.

After choosing to bowl first, SFU delivered a magnificent bowling performance, containing WF to a moderate score of 133-8 in 20 overs. The Unicorns then kicked off their run chase, off to an encouraging start by scoring 14 runs in the first over, setting the tone for an exciting run chase.

However, the tide swiftly turned, and disaster struck during the second ball of the third over when opener Finn Allen swung for the fences. Unfortunately, his aggressive slog only managed to scrape an edge, sending the ball flying toward the backward point region.

Initially, it seemed Allen had successfully cleared the in-field, but Phillips, showcasing extraordinary athleticism, put in a lightning-fast sprint from his position at backward point. Tracking the path of the ball mid-flight while on the run, he performed a spectacular diving catch which resulted in SFU’s first wicket.

Phillips produced a similar effort a few overs later off Saurabh Netravalkar’s bowling, although this time it was the other side of the ground as he grabbed a similar catch to put an end to Matthew Wade’s knock for just 8.

The stunning pieces of fielding ignited WF's bowling unit, with Netravalkar stepping up to deliver a spell-binding performance. He methodically disintegrated SFU's batting order with an astonishing 6-9 in just 3.5 overs, helping his side bowl SFU for 103 as they fell short by 30 runs.

This win was the third consecutive win for Washington Freedom in the MLC 2023, further bolstering their supremacy at the top of the table with a total of six points.
