The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to organize the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 mini-auction in late December. According to reports, the purse amount is raised to a staggering ₹100 crore for each franchise in what comes as a significant update.

BCCI ups the ante with ₹100 crore purse

The final date and venue are to be determined post the World Cup 2023, with Mumbai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Kochi, and Kolkata as potential hosts.

Notably, unlike previous years, this auction will not limit the number of player retentions by teams. The auction budget has been increased from the ₹95 crore mark set for the previous season.

The focus is now on World Cup and once every detail is taken care of, we will move towards IPL. We will decide the date after the World Cup. It is most likely in the third or fourth week of December. But it will only be discussed at the IPL GC meeting later on,”  said a BCCI official as quoted by Insidesport.

The substantial purse increase is likely to incite another bidding extravaganza, mirroring the high-profile signings from the previous season. Players like Sam Curran, Cameron Green, Ben Stokes, Nicholas Pooran, and Harry Brook all commanded prices above ₹15 crore during the last auction.

The franchises are already gearing up for the upcoming auction and the season. Teams such as the Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants have made changes to their coaching staff, while Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals are reportedly on the hunt for new coaches.

The IPL 2023 Auction, held in Kochi on December 23, faced several logistical challenges due to its proximity to Christmas, leading to difficulties in booking hotels and requiring several individuals like Ricky Ponting to participate virtually. The BCCI has assured that such an issue won't repeat this year, with plans for all staff and officials to be present on site.

“It will not be on Christmas Eve for sure. We will try to look at a comfortable date for all,”  added the official.
