Faf Du Plessis recalled his own tryst with bitter disappointments in previous editions of the World Cup and offered a word of sympathy to Indian players, who experienced it in the worst form with a loss in the recent final in Ahmedabad against Australia.

The former South Africa captain and middle-order giant, who was part of Proteas' juggernaut at the 2011, 2015 and 2019 World Cups, said it would take some time for Rohit Sharma and company to overcome the heartbreak and they must embrace this phase rather than feeling dejected and hopeless about things.

The Men in Blue suffered a defeat that will sting for quite some time after raising great hopes of reclaiming world cricket's biggest crown with an excellent run that saw them sustain a nine-match winning streak in the league stage before storming past historic nemesis New Zealand in the semifinal.

Du Plessis On India's World Cup Final Setback

For Du Plessis, it would be a familar setting, having seen the golden generation of South African cricketers, including some of the game's biggest legends, unable to bag any silverware in their illustrious careers and a nation still carrying the tag of chokers and perennial losers at the big stage.

"That is a big challenge. I remember going through a similar experience as a cricketer when we went through the highs and lows of the 2015 World Cup," Du Plessis told NDTV.

"The heartache that you have to deal with takes a bit of time and it is a bit like breaking up with a girlfriend. You cannot just get over it straight away."

"India were so amazing in the way they played in this World Cup. They were unbelievable the way they went about their business. They will be feeling in a similar way and they will be heartbroken. That was their World Cup to win."

The Indian team will have to let go off their World Cup final loss as they gear up to face South Africa in a multi-format series, starting from December 10.
