Rajasthan Royals had their four-match unbeaten streak broken by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 2. Chasing a monumental 202 for a win, Sanju Samson and co. fell just one run short of their target at Hyderabad in match number 50 of the IPL 2024 season.

The outcome marked Rajasthan Royals’ only second defeat of the tournament and their first in over three weeks. While speaking with the commentators during the post-match presentation ceremony, Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson praised SRH bowlers for securing a last-ball win in a crunch high-scoring thriller on May 2. He said:

“Yeah, absolutely. We have played some really close games this season. We have to give the credit to the SRH bowlers and their players for fighting till the end. We were at 10 runs per over till the last over. The margin of error in IPL is so small and credit to them. Knowing the nature of IPL, the game is not done until it’s over. You have to be confident till the last moment and they had quality bowlers.”

The cricketer also hailed Trent Boult, Ravichandran Ashwin and Avesh Khan for keeping things tight during the powerplay overs of the SRH innings upfront. He added:

“It was tough to bat against the new ball. I felt Ash bhai, Boulty, Avesh bowled brilliantly with the new ball. As the ball got older, it became good to bat on.”

Chasing 202 for a win, Sanju Samson was dismissed for a three-ball duck by Bhuvneshwar Kumar before valiant fifties from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag took the game down to the final over. The 29-year-old stated:

“You have to give the credit to both the youngsters (Jaiswal and Parag). Myself and Jos got out early but both took the responsibility and took the game deep. You have to give the credit to them for playing the way they did.”

Despite the defeat, Rajasthan Royals continue to occupy the top spot on the IPL 2024 points table. Under the leadership of Sanju Samson, the Royals will now face Delhi Capitals in an away game on May 7.
