Cricket is about to say goodbye to one of its fiercest T20 icons as West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell announces his retirement. Representing the nation, the Caribbean batter gifted some unforgettable moments to fans and crafted an undisputed legacy.

Ahead of him signing off from the game, Russell was asked about the proudest moment of his career, and he pointed to Team India’s most heartbreaking defeat in 2016.

Russell Reveals The Proudest Moment Of His Career

Andre Russell is set to bid adieu to the game, and the year 2016 will be remembered forever in his career as he played a pivotal role in the West Indies' second T20 World Cup triumph, especially in the semi-final against India. Chasing a daunting 193, he stepped up at a critical juncture and turned the game in his team’s favor.

Joining Simmons on the crease, Russell played a fiery knock of unbeaten 43 runs in 20 balls and secured the victory. As he is standing on the dusk of his career, he was asked about the proudest moments of his career. Speaking to Cricket West Indies, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo, Russell didn’t hesitate to name the 2016 T20 World Cup semifinal as the highlight of his journey.

“Definitely [my best moment was] the 2016 World Cup, that semi-final game against India where I brought the team home, me and Lendl Simmons, and obviously the start that we got from the other batters,” he said.

“Chasing 190-plus in that semi-final in India, with the crowd supporting India only, that was already a bit of pressure, but the wicket was a very good wicket, so the confidence that we had in the changing room and the batters that were left to come, it gave me the freedom and the confidence to go out and play the role that I did,” he added.

A Perfect Stage For The Final Dance

After a humiliating Test series defeat, the West Indies is all set to face Australia in a five-match T20 series. As the series commences soon, Andre Russell will represent the nation for the last time in the second T20I on July 23. As the last match of his career is set to unfold in his home ground, the Caribbean star called the moment nothing short of ‘perfect.’

“I think it's the perfect ground and the perfect series - against a good team as well, Australia - to end my international career. By just seeing the [social media] posts and seeing stuff going around on the internet, I get a bit emotional, to be honest, but, you know, decision already made, and I think I've done well enough to actually say, yes, that's it for me towards international cricket,” he concluded.

Over his impressive career, Andre Russell played 141 matches for the West Indies. He scored 2,114 runs and took 132 wickets. Though he is retiring from international cricket, he will continue to amaze fans with his exciting talent in franchise leagues worldwide.
