In a major blow to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), key pacer Deepak Chahar limped off the field with a hamstring injury after delivering just two balls in the IPL 2024 match against the Punjab Kings (PBKS). This incident has cast a shadow over CSK's campaign as they eye the playoffs.

The match, held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, saw Chahar in visible discomfort, aggravating an already familiar hamstring issue. He had to be assisted off the ground after his brief appearance, in which he conceded a boundary from the opening delivery.

Injury doesn't look good: Fleming

CSK's head coach, Stephen Fleming, expressed grave concerns about Chahar's fitness in the post-match press conference.

"Deepak Chahar doesn't look good. The initial feeling wasn't great. So we are waiting for a more positive report. Physio and doctors will have a look," Fleming stated, indicating the seriousness of Chahar’s condition.

Adding to CSK's woes, the team is also grappling with the absence of other key players due to injuries and health issues. Matheesha Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande, two crucial bowlers, are sidelined with a niggle and the flu, respectively. This has forced CSK to make unexpected changes to their lineup, impacting their overall game strategy.

"Sri Lankan boys are off to get a visa. So we are hoping that their process is smooth and we get them back for our next game up north (at Dharamshala)," Fleming added, underlining the challenges the team faces with player availability.

Despite the setbacks, replacements Richard Gleeson and Shardul Thakur stepped in but struggled to contain PBKS, especially under heavy dew conditions during the chase. CSK's inning concluded at a subpar 162/7, with PBKS comfortably reaching the target, leading to a seven-wicket defeat for the Men in Yellow.

As CSK prepares for their next match against PBKS in Dharamshala on May 5, the team desperately hopes for Chahar's speedy recovery and the return of their other absent players to stabilize their bowling attack and keep their playoff hopes alive.
