In a significant development, Punjab Kings (PBKS) won the toss and opted to bowl first against the five-time champions at MA Chidambaram, Chennai. However, Chennai Super Kings' star bowlers Matheesha Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande are not playing today.

CSK brings in Shardul Thakur and Richard Gleeson (making his debut) in place of Pathirana and Deshpande.

Why Are Matheesha Pathirana & Tushar Despande Not Playing Against PBKS?

Pathirana, the Sri Lankan speedster, is nursing a niggle, temporarily sidelining him from the action. Despite his impressive performance, boasting 13 wickets in just 6 innings, his physical condition necessitated caution.

Similarly, Deshpande finds himself unable to take the field due to illness, robbing CSK of his bowling prowess. The 28-year-old pacer may have only claimed 10 wickets in 9 innings, but his contributions are valued nonetheless. 

In their absence, CSK has drafted Shardul Thakur and Richard Gleeson, the latter making his debut, to bolster their bowling attack. While Pathirana and Deshpande’s absence is felt, CSK remains optimistic about the replacements stepping up to the challenge.
