In a recent controversy during the IPL 2024, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has highlighted a significant inconsistency in the enforcement of the league's Code of Conduct.

This comes after Kolkata Knight Riders' young bowler, Harshit Rana, faced a stern penalty for his on-field behavior.

Harshit was fined his entire match fee and suspended for one game following an aggressive gesture toward Delhi Capitals' Abishek Porel during a match at Eden Gardens on April 29.

This incident involved Harshit signaling Porel back to the pavilion after claiming his wicket, moments after being hit for three consecutive boundaries.

Chopra takes dig at Kohli

Expressing his concerns on the social media platform 'X', Aakash Chopra specifically referenced Indian cricket star Virat Kohli, known for his fiery demeanour on the field.

Chopra stated, "If a send-off like that is enough for demerit points and amounts to a Level-1 offence… I know a very popular cricketer who would get banned every alternate game."

His comment points to what he perceives as a double standard in the application of disciplinary measures within the IPL.

This isn't the first time Harshit Rana has come under scrutiny this season. Previously, he was fined 60 percent of his match fees for his intense celebrations against SRH’s Mayank Agarwal, which included a stare down and a flying kiss post-dismissal.

Chopra's critique raises questions about the consistency with which penalties are applied, citing the past incidents involving Virat Kohli, like his heated exchanges with Lucknow Super Giants(LSG) Naveen-ul-Haq and mentor Gautam Gambhir last year.

Moreover, concerns about Kohli's conduct have escalated with his recent actions of showing disrespect towards match officials during his dismissal controversy against KKR, further fueling discussions about the disregard of the spirit of the game.
