The 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup was greenlit earlier this week by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) by mapping out the entire schedule for the tournament. Set to be hosted in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) between September 9 and September 28 later this year, the upcoming 2025 Asia Cup will serve as a major dress rehearsal for competing nations ahead of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
As one can expect, the official unveiling of the 2025 Asia Cup drew a widespread outrage by a legion of Indian cricket fans, with several of them questioning the scheduling of the tournament. Citing India’s prevailing geo-political tensions with hostile neighbours Pakistan, a majority of Indian fans had urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to boycott the multi-nation event.
Sourav Ganguly Says “Sport Needs To Be Played”
Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly believes that “sports must go on” amidst the political mayhem between India and Pakistan. While the ex-cricketer advocated for peace by saying that incidents like the Pahalgam terrorist attack earlier this year should not have happened, he added that the Indian government has already taken a strong stance against Pakistan’s cross-border terrorism.
While speaking exclusively with ANI, Sourav Ganguly said:
“I am okay. The sport must go on. At the same time Pahalgam should not happen, but the sport must go on. Terrorism must not happen; it needs to be stopped. India took a strong stance towards terrorism... Sport needs to be played.”
As per the schedule, Team India might potentially face Pakistan thrice in the 2025 Asia Cup, once in the opening round of the tournament. The Indian team is placed in Group A of the multi-nation event, alongside Oman, hosts UAE and Pakistan.
India’s first match of the tournament will be played against UAE on September 10.
