'In Our Time, Dravid, Sachin, Ganguly..,': Virender Sehwag’s Bold Take On India’s Continous Spin Struggles

Virender Sehwag, known for his fearless batting, has now stirred up a debate off the field with his remarks about the state of spin bowling in India. After India’s recent disappointing performance against Sri Lanka, where their batters faltered against spin, Sehwag pointed out a concerning trend.

During the three-match ODI series, Indian batters struggled to counter the Sri Lankan spinners, losing two of the three games.

Virender Sehwag, in an interview with Amar Ujala, bluntly stated that India lacks quality spinners. According to him, the T20 format and the reduced time players spend in domestic cricket have contributed to this decline.

"One reason for this is that the more white ball cricket there is, the less spinners will come, because in T20 cricket you bowl 24 balls and do not flight them, so you do not develop the skill to get the batsman out. I think that could be one reason. Indian players also play less domestic cricket. In domestic cricket you get to play more spin than in international cricket. So that can also be a reason. I think there are no quality spinners in India right now whom I see who can fly well and take wickets," Sehwag explained.

He emphasized that domestic cricket, where players once honed their skills against spin, is no longer a priority for many, impacting both the spinners and the batters.

Why Modern Batters Struggle Against Spin

Reflecting on the golden days of Indian cricket, Sehwag recalled how stalwarts like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sourav Ganguly consistently faced spinners in domestic tournaments. Sehwag believes this is one reason why even world-class batters like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli struggle against quality spin.

"In our time, Dravid, Sachin, Ganguly, Laxman, Yuvraj, all of us used to play domestic cricket too, whether it was ODI or four-day cricket, we used to play a lot of domestic cricket. We used to play a lot of spinners in those matches, but in today's busy schedule, players are getting less time. There are different leagues, due to which the skill of playing spin is not being developed by the players," he added.

Sehwag's Future: Eyeing an IPL Coaching Role

Earlier this week, in an interview Sehwag revealed his interest in coaching—specifically in the IPL.

"I’m open to coaching an IPL franchise, but not the Indian team," Sehwag stated, citing family commitments as a reason for preferring a less demanding schedule.

His sons, both budding cricketers, have become his priority, and Sehwag is keen to balance his career and family life.
