Indian captain Rohit Sharma made a booming return into the side in their dead-rubber third ODI match in Rajkot against Australia. The dashing opener, in pursuit of a colossal 353-run target, dined on the visiting bowlers with elegant pulls and raced to his half-century inside the first 10 overs of the innings.

Sharma spent quality time in the middle in his team’s final pre-World Cup 2023 outing, even though his side failed to overcome Australia’s total by 66 runs. After the match, the Indian skipper expressed his happiness over his own batting form, and acknowledged team’s successful run in ODIs off late.

After the match, Indian captain Rohit Sharma said that the team has been performing well in ODIs off late, despite being challenged in different conditions. Speaking at the post-match presentation, he stated:

“I'm pretty happy (with my own form), of course I would like to go all the way along but if I'm hitting like that I'm happy. The last 7-8 ODIs we have played really well, we have been challenged under different conditions and different teams, I thought we responded to that challenge pretty well. Unfortunately, not the result we wanted today.”

Sharma also defended ace speedster Jasprit Bumrah after he was taken apart for 81 runs from his 10 overs by a rampaging Australian batting line-up in the match. The legendary opener claimed that Bumrah’s fitness is essential for the team and a bad game can happen to anyone.

The cricketer also stated that he and the team management is pretty much set on its World Cup 2023 squad, and the team’s primary aim is to conquer the title by playing good cricket over the next month-and-a-half at home.

“I'm pretty happy with Jasprit Bumrah, more importantly how he feels body-wise, he has got so much skill, one bad game can happen to anyone. How he feels mentally and body-wise is key for us and that's looking good for us. When we talk about the 15 we are very clear what we want. We are not confused, we know where we are headed as a team. It's a team sport and we want everyone to come and play their part - that's how we win championships. It's about looking after the body and try and stay fresh for the next one and half months.”

Team India will now face Australia in their opening World Cup 2023 match on October 8. The much-awaited contest is slated to be played out in Chennai’s M. A. Chidambaram Stadium.
