Bangladesh veteran Tamim Iqbal turned out to be surprise omission from team’s World Cup 2023 squad, as announced by the country’s cricket board on September 27. While initial reports indicated that the cricketer was sidelined owing to his fitness concerns, it was later revealed that he opted himself out of the squad because he was not pleased with BCB’s last-minute terms and conditions.

Mere hours after opting himself out of Bangladesh’s World Cup 2023 squad, Tamim Iqbal shared an emotional message for his fans.

Tamim Iqbal shares heartfelt request

A few hours after Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had announced their 15-player World Cup 2023 line-up, veteran opening batsman Tamim Iqbal took to his Facebook account and explained reasons behind his decision to opt out of the tournament.

The legendary opener confirmed that while injury was not an issue, he opted out because he was asked by a BCB official to either sit out or bat lower down the order in Bangladesh’s opening World Cup 2023 game against Afghanistan.

Tamim Iqbal wished the selected crew his very best and hoped that they would bring success for their nation in India. The 34-year-old also asked his fans to pray for him and to always keep him in their hearts and minds. He said:

“Nothing more to say. Stay well, pray for me and one more request - Please don’t forget me.”

Notably, Tamim Iqbal announced his retirement from international cricket back in July this year, only to withdraw his decision at the behest of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

It is worth nothing that current Bangladesh team captain Shakib Al Hasan had reportedly stated that he was not willing to lead any potential unfit players in the side at the upcoming tournament in India. Both Shakib and Tamim are already not on good talking terms with each other owing to their possible underlying conflict within the team.

Regardless, Bangladesh will commence their World Cup 2023 campaign with a match against Afghanistan on October 7 in Dharamshala.

Here is a look at Bangladesh’s entire 15-player World Cup 2023 squad:
