'Ah, I Cannot Hear Anything,' Labuschagne's Sarcastic Reply About His Position In World Cup Squad

Australian top-order clicked together to claim a consolation win over India in their dead-rubber third ODI in Rajkot. After openers David Warner and Mitchell Marsh charted up blistering half-centuries at the top, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne navigated their side towards a monumental score by slapping identical 70s in the middle overs.

Australia’s 352-7 eventually proved too much to handle for the Indians, whose star-studded top-order slumped to their run-chase pressure in front of part-timer Glenn Maxwell.

After the match, Labuschagne acknowledged Australia’s drought-ending win and praised Team India for outperforming them in the first two ODIs of their pre-World Cup 2023 series.

Labuschagne says nice to see team gel with consolation win

Marnus Labuschagne rounded up 72 runs from his bat in just 58 balls, and ensured his side reached a colossal 352-7 from their 50 overs. The cricketer had arrived to the crease much later than expected (after 28 overs), as each of his preceding three batters blasted blistering half-centuries upfront.

Labuschagne claimed that it felt more difficult to navigate the innings towards the back end for once, after he came into bat at a different time than he usually does. The right-hander stated that batting towards the finishing stages got a bit too difficult here because the ball started spinning and sitting onto the wicket. He said:

“It was nice to contribute. I came in at a different time to what I have been. It was nice to navigate that scenario at the back end and get a really good total on the board. It felt like a game where the front end was the nicest time to bat. The back end the ball started spinning a bit more and sitting in the wicket. I thought the boys did well at the back end.”

Marnus Labuschagne also praised hosts India for their emphatic series-clinching wins in the first two matches, but expressed his pleasure in seeing the big Australian guns clicking together just before the 2023 World Cup.

“We've lost the series, India were too good in the first two games but it was nice to see all the big guns back today and it was nice to see the team gel.”

Labuschagne was also asked about his chances to get into the World Cup squad but the right-handed batter very cleverly avoided the question and kept the suspense going.

Ah, I cannot hear anything... [unable to hear Murali Kartik's question which was translated below by co-commentator]. I would love to answer that question but I can’t here [on not being a part of the World Cup squad and the feeling despite the performance]."

Australia, under Pat Cummins, will now face World Cup 2023 hosts India in their tournament opener on October 8. Their much-awaited bout is slated to be played out at Chennai’s M. A. Chidambaram Stadium.
