The Group A match of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 between India and Canada was called off without a ball being bowled due to a wet outfield at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Florida.

This called off marks the third consecutive match at Lauderhill to be abandoned after similar fates for the Sri Lanka-Nepal and Ireland-USA games.

Gavaskar Criticizes ICC For Florida T20 WC Matches

Former Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar expressed dissatisfaction with the ICC for hosting matches at venues lacking comprehensive ground covers.

During a conversation with tournament broadcaster Star Sports, Gavaskar stated, "ICC should not host the matches where there are no covers to cover the entire ground. You just can't cover the pitch and let the other parts of the ground get wet."

Florida has experienced heavy rains over the past few days, leading to waterlogged streets and wet outfields. Although Saturday’s skies remained cloudy without significant rainfall, the previous days' precipitation left the field unplayable.

The USA-Ireland match at the same venue was also abandoned on Friday due to rain. Despite the covered pitch, the outfield was still wet and muddy, creating unsafe playing conditions.

Gavaskar’s criticism highlights his concern over the ICC’s decision to hold World Cup matches in venues without adequate weather protection measures.

He emphasized the need for better planning, suggesting that matches should only be scheduled at venues capable of fully covering the field to ensure the safety of players and fairness to spectators.

Following the abandonment, Canada moved to the third spot in the Group A points table, replacing Pakistan. Pakistanr, already out of the competition, must win their final match against Ireland to reclaim the third position.
