Despite terrific performance in the Champions Trophy and IPL 2025, Shreyas Iyer’s notable omission from Team India’s Asia Cup squad raised eyebrows. From fans to the experts slammed the selectors for that questionable move.
But an injury setback kept him away from cricket for a long time. In a recent interaction, the Indian batter opened up about the horrific blow that nearly ended his career.
Shreyas Iyer Reveals Dangerous Injury Setback
After Shreyas Iyer made his debut for India, the team found its most dependable middle-order batter. In the 2023 World Cup, he was a key player for the side. But the momentum shifted after Team India ended up as the runners-up in that tournament. A back injury sidelined him, and his struggles deepened when he was left out of the BCCI’s central contract.
With consistent domestic performance, he made a comeback in the Champions Trophy 2025, but the route was not smooth. In a recent chat with GQ India, he revealed that the injury nearly ended his career, leaving his one leg paralyzed.
“No one can understand the pain I went through. I was totally paralysed in one leg. With spine surgery, you can place a rod in the back and still manage. But a snapped nerve, which is what I had, is really, really dangerous. The pain was horrendous, running all the way down to my tiny toe. It was so scary,” he said.
On His Asia Cup 2025 Snub
Coming back to the international arena in the Champions Trophy, Shreyas Iyer was Team India’s second-highest run-scorer with 243 runs in 5 matches. He continued his exceptional form in the IPL 2025 while leading the Punjab Kings. In 17 matches, he scored 604 runs with a strike rate of 175.07. Despite his stellar season, he was left out of India’s Asia Cup squad. Reflecting on the snub, Iyer said he remained determined and ready to seize every opportunity.
“I can only control the controllable. I can only keep working on my skills and strength, and when the opportunity arises, I'll grab it with both hands,” he added.
After missing out on the Asia Cup, he is set for a comeback in India's colors. As Australia A is ready to face India A in two multi day matches, Captain Iyer is ready to lead the India A side.
