The 2025 Big Bash League (BBL) got off to a wet start, with the toss for the opening match between Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers delayed by rain at Optus Stadium in Perth on Sunday (December 14, 2025).

The toss was scheduled for 1:15 PM IST, but the proceedings were interrupted by persistent showers. Covers have been placed over the pitch, and the bat flip has been postponed.

Adding to the uncertainty, lightning has been reported near the stadium, forcing officials to ask spectators to empty the seating bowl and take shelter until conditions are safe. Safety measures are being strictly followed to ensure no one is at risk at the Optus Stadium.

Players, staff, and fans had to leave the stadium due to warnings of lightning and severe weather. The teams, the Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers, could not finish their warm-up before leaving the field. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Perth area.

According to the weather report (AccuWeather.com) significant storm is approaching Perth.The weather is expected to be unstable, with a severe thunderstorm warning in effect from 4:04 PM to 7:04 PM. During this period, there is a strong possibility of rough weather conditions, including rain and gusty winds. 

Around 3.3 mm of rainfall is expected, and the rain may last for approximately one and a half hours. The probability of precipitation is 55%, indicating a moderate chance of rain, while the likelihood of thunderstorms is 13%.

Wind is likely expected to blow from the east at about 24 km/h, with strong gusts reaching up to 52 km/h, which may cause discomfort, dust, or minor disturbances. The sky will remain partly to mostly cloudy, with nearly 60% cloud cover throughout the day. 

Overall, the weather will be cloudy, followed by rain and possibly stormy weather in the evening, so there is a likelihood that the match will be called off.

Update: It is important to mention that large puddles have started to form on the outfield. The cut-off time for a 5-overs-per-side contest is 3:50 PM IST/6:20 PM Local Time.
