The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 did not have a fairytale ending for Team India, who lost to Australia in the final at Ahmedabad, forcing former players, fans, and critics to ponder things that Rohit Sharma and Co. could have done differently.

The most unanimous call was that India could have included Ravichandran Ashwin, who holds an excellent track record against the Australians.

One of India's leading Test wicket-takers, Ashwin, played just one match, featuring in their opening World Cup encounter against Australia at Chennai. He recently opened up on Rohit Sharma's decision not to field him in the final.

Speaking on former Indian cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath's YouTube channel, Ashwin stated that he understood Sharma's call to leave him out of the playing XI, and even got mentally prepared to play the role of the 12th man for his side.

Here's what Ashwin said

"It's about standing in someone else's shoes and looking at things from his/her viewpoint. If I had been in Rohit's shoes, I would have thought 100 times about changing the combination. It was going very well for the team. Why would I rest a fast bowler and play 3 spinners?"

"I was able to understand the thought process of Rohit Sharma. Playing the final is a big opportunity. I was preparing for it for 3 days in the lead-up. I was not replying to a lot of people. At the same time, I was prepared to cheer for the team and run in with electral if I didn't get the opportunity. I was mentally prepared for that too."

Ashwin already won an ICC World Cup title in 2011 and looked to clinch his second this time around.
