'I Just Can't Fit Harry Brook': Morgan on England Star's Exclusion from WC Squad

In an unexpected decision that caught many off-guard, England batter, Harry Brook wasn't named in the World Cup 2023 provisional squad.

Morgan addressed Brook's omission amidst Stokes' return

The Yorkshire-born prodigy, who has a stunning Test average of 64.25 after just 17 matches — a feat only surpassed by the legendary Don Bradman — seemed a strong contender for the team.

However, Brook was left out of England’s provisional squad for World Cup 2023 with Ben Stokes' unanticipated return from his ODI retirement. This resurgence from Stokes left selectors with a tough choice to make and it was Brook who had to bear the brunt.

England's revolutionary former captain, Eoin Morgan who led them to their first World Cuo win in 2019 shed light on this selection quandary during a chat with Sky Sports.

Emphasizing the abundance of talent in the English cricket pool, Morgan hinted at the challenges of team composition.

"In really good teams that have a lot of talent, but mainly a lot of success, there are really good players that miss out. When I look at the squad that has been selected, I can’t get Harry Brook into that squad," said Morgan.

According to him, the return of Stokes, especially without his bowling contributions, necessitated the inclusion of a top-order backup. The southpaw reckoned that given this blend of requirements and the need to maintain a balanced side, Brook's spot became challenging to secure, despite his undeniable talent.

“Simply because the return of Ben Stokes adds another middle-order player. Without him bowling, you do need a top-order player as a genuine replacement if somebody in the top order goes down. You need two seamers and an extra spinner which they have cover for but an extra batter in amongst that, I just can’t fit Harry Brook in, which is amazing to say,” concluded Morgan.

Reacting to the squad announcement, Brook gracefully voiced his disappointment while displaying commendable maturity. Acknowledging the setback, he has now set his sights on upcoming opportunities.
