Team India is gearing up for their Asia Cup 2023 campaign with their training camp in full swing in Alur. However, they had an off day on Sunday after three days of intense training. The Men in Blue all set to fly to Sri Lanka on Tuesday, 29th August, with their first big clash against Pakistan in Kandy scheduled on September 2.

Team India will leave for Sri Lanka on August 29, KL Rahul likely to play first game

However, amidst the flurry of preparations, KL Rahul's fitness progression commands significant attention. Having undergone a hamstring surgery, Rahul is inching towards achieving full fitness.

Although the 31-year-old showed commendable progress during his keeping practice sessions, he reported some discomfort which reportedly ruled him out of the much-anticipated India vs Pakistan encounter.

On a brighter note, insiders indicate that the medical team is optimistic about Rahul's progress. As the team is about to leave, Rahul is scheduled for another round of keeping practice this Monday. If all goes well, he is likely to feature in India’s playing XI for the game against Pakistan.

If Rahul misses the opening match, Ishan Kishan will be taking his place behind the stumps, as confirmed by BCCI Selection Chairman, Ajit Agarkar. It's also reassuring for the team to have Sanju Samson as a backup, travelling with the squad.

While Rahul’s recovery is under keen observation, Shreyas Iyer has made a notable comeback from his back injury and is set to feature in the playing XI.

Furthermore, the team will receive a boost as Jasprit Bumrah and other cricketers, fresh from their T20I series against Ireland, join the camp. They are expected to engage in match practice sessions before departing for Sri Lanka on August 29.
