Brett Lee has urged the Australian team management and selection committee to avoid using ‘rotation policy’ for fast bowlers in Australia’s upcoming home Test series against India. The legendary speedster believes regular Australian pacemen Mitchell Starc, captain Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood should feature in each of the impending five Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test matches.
Brett Lee wants Australian quicks to play all 5 Tests
Brett Lee believes that Australia’s best chance of defeating India in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy series is to ensure that regular fast bowlers like Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood play each of the five Tests, without worrying about any rotation policy.
Cricket boards often tend to rest fast bowlers in order to preserve their fitness, much like how the BCCI has done with Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah in the past. While speaking on the Fox Cricket podcast The Follow On, Brett Lee said:
“Australia are blessed with three amazing (fast) bowlers in Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, and pending fitness, I think they will play all five Tests. I just really hope that (the selectors) don’t hedge their bets and say, ‘We have got to try to stop people getting injured’.”
“Yes, we don’t want to see players get injured, and bowling is such an unnatural action, but that is what you sign up to do and playing Test cricket as a fast bowler is exactly where you want to be as a cricketer. I (hope) that they play all five Test matches.”
Mitchell Starc recently sent out a stern warning to Indian batters by skittling Victoria’s batting line-up in a Sheffield Shield match at the MCG. The speedster picked up six wickets in the second innings of the match at an expense of just 81 runs in 17.5 overs.
India’s five-match Test tour of Australia will commence with the series-opener at the Optus Stadium in Perth from November 22 onwards. The series also constitutes a part of the ongoing 2023-25 WTC cycle.
