Australian all-rounder Cameron Green has successfully undergone back surgery in New Zealand after suffering a fifth stress fracture during Australia's white-ball series against England. The 25-year-old chose to have surgery to address the recurring injury, which will sideline him for at least six months, meaning he will miss the upcoming five-game Test series against India.

Cameron Green, one of Australia's finest all-format all-rounders, was poised to play a massive role in the upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy featuring five Tests against India. He was slated to play as a full-time batter in the middle order, with Steve Smith moving up in the opening slot.

However, Australia's strategy was demolished soon after as Cameron Green decided to undergo spine surgery in New Zealand to avoid the injury relapse once and for all. After a successful surgery, Green took to social media to share positive updates.

Green appeared in good spirits post-surgery, sharing a picture from his hospital bed on Instagram, where he posted a photo with a double thumbs-up and the caption, "First coffee walk post-surgery."

The surgery was performed by New Zealand-based surgeons Grahame Inglis and Rowan Schouten, who fused screws and a titanium cable into his lower back to stabilise the area and prevent further fractures.

Notably, Green will need to spend a minimum of 6 months in rehabilitation to fully recover from this sensitive injury. Hence, he will skip the upcoming Test series against India and Sri Lanka.

Steve Smith to bat at no.4 against India

In the wake of David Warner's retirement, Steve Smith, arguably Australia's best batter over the past several years, stepped into the opener's role for four Test matches against West Indies and New Zealand. In these matches, Smith scored 171 runs at an average of 28.50, but it seems his stint as an opener will be short-lived.

Australian cricket's chief selector, George Bailey, confirmed that Steve Smith will no longer be opening in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Smith himself expressed a desire to return to the middle order, and with Cameron Green ruled out of the series, his return to his preferred spot makes even more sense.
