Punjab Kings star Shashank Singh bashed a career-best 61* against Gujarat Titans in a high-scoring thriller at Ahmedabad. His 29-ball whirlwind knock ended up orchestrating a phenomenal run-chase for Punjab Kings in match number 17 of the IPL 2024 season.

Being adjudged as ‘Player of the Match’ for his efforts, the 32-year-old described his experience of bumping across the likes of Rashid Khan and co., and credited the Punjab Kings team management for backing him during practice sessions.

Shashank still ‘trying to sink in’ match-winning knock

Chasing 200 for a win, Shashank Singh at number six thwarted seasoned Gujarat Titans bowling attack with a scintillating 29-ball 61*. The right-hander drilled six boundaries and four sixes, and also landed the finishing blow in the final over of the match.

While speaking at the post-match ceremony while collecting his ‘Player of the Match’ award, a modest Shashank Singh expressed his excitement and reflected his batting mindset after being tasked to bat higher up the order by the head coach.

“Still trying to sink in because I visualized all these things before the match and turning it into reality, feeling really happy and proud of myself. I feel cricketing shots more so it was just that watch the ball and react to it. That's what the coach told me. Usually I bat at 7, today I batted at 5 so the coach told me to play on the merit," he added.

Toppling Rashid Khan and co. in a high-scoring thriller, Shashank Singh also praised the Gujarat Titans bowling attack by describing them as the “legends” of the game.

“They are the legends of the cricket but when you go to bat, I feel like I am the best in the world. I see the ball and react to it.”

Shashank further expressed his gratitude to the Punjab Kings team management for backing him up during the training sessions. He also recalled his experience of playing in SRH back in IPL 2022, where he found himself in the playing XI in 10 games.

“You get experience. I couldn't get much matches before. When I played in SRH, it was good experience there. Here the coaching staff, the management and the owners backed me during the practice sessions and I was really confident.”

Emboldened by his career-best performance, Shashank Singh alongside the rest of his Punjab Kings colleagues will now face the SRH franchise in match number 23 of the IPL 2024 season. The match will be played at PBKS’s makeshift venue at Mullanpur on April 9.
