In an entertaining opener to the three-match ODI series, India defeated Australia by five wickets at Mohali. The win not only handed the host team the series lead but also clinched their position at the top of the ICC ODI rankings which now makes them No. 1 across all formats.

Shami reveals his favourite moment from dominant win vs Australia

The architect behind this win was none other than the Indian speedster, Mohammed Shami, who showcased the best ODI performances of his career. Recording an exceptional 5/51, he was instrumental in limiting the Aussies to a total of 276. The fifer marked his second occasion taking five wickets in an ODI match.

During the post-match presentation, Shami commented on the challenges of bowling in the hot conditions. He mentioned that the decision on bowling durations often rests with the captain and the prevailing game scenario.

The veteran pacer revealed that he particularly cherished dismissing Mitchell Marsh as the dismissal occurred courtesy of a perfectly controlled swing ball.

“(On bowling longer spells in the heat) It depends on the captain and the game situation, but despite the heat you feel like bowling 4-5 overs with the new ball. I enjoyed the wicket of Marsh, that's a different feeling when you get the outside edge, when you control your swing nicely,” said Shami.

Shami highlighted that his strategy was to ensure the ball was pitched at the right lengths with appropriate pace. Additionally, he lauded the chemistry among the pacers, citing their mutual understanding developed over years of playing together.

“It was important to hit the right lengths on this wicket, either at full pace or go slow, but bowling the right lengths were key. (On bowling with the other pacers) We've played together for a long time, so we know what needs to be done. Always enjoy when we bowl well in tandem like this,” concluded the 33-year-old speedster.

In reply to Australia’s 266, India's successful chase was helmed by notable innings from Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad, racking up 74 and 71 runs respectively.

Despite a brief period of uncertainty marked by swift wicket losses, the seasoned pair of KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav salvaged the situation with a timely 80-run partnership. Rahul remained unbeaten at 58 and sealed the victory for India.

The two teams will lock horns in the second ODI on Sunday, September 24, in Indore. With the momentum on their side, India will be aiming to clinch the series while Australia will look to level it.
