In a significant development just two weeks before the start of World Cup 2023, Indian pacer, Mohammed Shami, and his elder brother Mohammed Hasib were granted bail today by a Kolkata lower court in connection with a domestic violence case.

Mohammed Shami's legal woes subside with bail

The case dates back to March 2018, when Shami's estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, filed a complaint accusing the fast bowler of physically assaulting her, stemming from disagreements over alleged extra-marital affairs.

Following the complaint, the police initiated a probe into the matter and even issued an arrest warrant for Shami and his elder brother. However, a timely intervention by the lower court stayed the arrest warrant.

Jahan then escalated the matter to the Calcutta High Court, which upheld the lower court's decision.

Subsequently, the case reached the Supreme Court, which redirected the case back to the initial lower court, instructing a conclusive decision after thorough deliberation. Following this directive, the lower court resumed its hearings and today ruled to grant bail to the cricketer and his brother.

Earlier this year, the court had instructed Shami to provide a monthly alimony of Rs 1.30 lakh to Jahan, which includes Rs 50,000 for personal expenses and Rs 80,000 dedicated to the welfare of their daughter, who currently resides with Jahan.

Amid this legal turmoil, Shami remains an integral part of the Indian team. He is slated to participate in the upcoming three-match ODI series, which kicks off on September 22 in Mohali.
