In the high-stakes Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan, India skipper Suryakumar Yadav called upon Shivam Dube to bowl with the new ball. The unexpected decision turned out to be a masterstroke, as he conceded only 23 runs in 3 overs.

The decision raised eyebrows at first. In injured Hardik Pandya’s absence, Yadav was expected to start the inning with Jasprit Bumrah.

However, Dube, who has no notable experience of bowling with the new ball, was put in a spot in such a high-pressure situation.

Suryakumar Yadav reveals why the Shivam Dube gamble paid off

Weeks after India’s Asia Cup 2025 final victory, Suryakumar Yadav, talking to the press in Canberra, revealed that he trusted Shivam Dube’s preparation and mental strength completely.

“No, no, I don’t put pressure on anyone. You’re talking about expectations – I absolutely don’t put any pressure. Everyone has their own preparation; they know the conditions here, how they need to bowl. But he’s (Dube) been working really hard on his bowling," Suryakumar said.

He said that he doesn’t put pressure on any player whatsoever. But in general, SKY had a lot of faith in Dube’s bowling capabilities.

"And because of that, he showed such confidence that I made him bowl in the Asia Cup final, I knew – I’ve been playing with him for seven-eight years – how capable he is. I saw that his preparation was really good," he added.

With Hardik Pandya injured before the match, India needed a sixth bowling option who could step up under pressure. Shuvam Dube did just that. His calmness with the new ball and his ability to mix up the pace impressed everyone.

Pakistan’s openers found it difficult to score freely off Dube’s deliveries, which gripped slightly and kept low. That early control allowed Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav to attack later, and India bowled Pakistan out for just 146.

SKY to trust Shivam Dube again with the ball

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav also hinted that this might not be the last time Shivam Dube opens the bowling.

Be it Australia or any other condition, if he feels the all-rounder can contribute, he won't be hesitant in backing Dube.

“If your preparation is solid, if you’ve practiced well and there’s no doubt in your mind, then I think you’re very clear with your plans. And he is very clear with his plans. If he gets another opportunity tomorrow, why not? It’s a good team, and when you bowl well against a good team, it boosts your confidence even more," SKY added.

The India vs Australia T20I series will begin on October 29 in Canberra. The series is 5 games long.
