In what seems to be a moment of redemption for the wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, BCCI’s selection committee has picked him in the 15-men squad of India for the T20 World Cup 2026, followed by the five-match home T20I series against New Zealand. Ishan has been selected as a backup wicketkeeper-batter, with Sanju Samson being the first choice for the same role.
Meanwhile, the Jharkhand batter came up with the first reaction after getting a World Cup call up. He expressed his delight alongside praising the fellow teammates of Jharkhand for lifting the maiden SMAT title for their side.

“I am very happy. Also very happy for my domestic team, Jharkhand, on winning their maiden SMAT trophy,” said Ishan during a conversation with ANI after BCCI announced India’s squad for the prestigious cricket biennial.
Notably, the southpaw enjoyed an amazing season in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025 as he finished as the leading run-scorer in the tournament. Ishan scored 517 runs in just 10 innings, with a sensational batting average of 57.44 and a swashbuckling strike rate of 197.32.
Speaking of India’s squad selection for the upcoming T20 World Cup, the chairman of the selection committee, Ajit Agarkar revealed the reason behind Shubman Gill’s omission from the mix. Agarkar explained that the management was looking ahead for the alternative combinations in the top order.
Meanwhile, Agarkar also stressed the notion that India was also considering a wicketkeeper-batter in the top order. In other words, it also translates into the fact that the wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson will be opening the innings for India, alongside the young southpaw Abhishek Sharma in the T20 World Cup 2026.
